Climate change exposure and internal carbon pricing adoption

Governments and corporations around the world are increasingly pressured to manage climate-related business risks reduce their carbon footprint. Consequently, a growing number of have started implementing internal pricing (ICP) programs, assigning monetary value emissions as mitigation adaptation mechanism. This paper explores motives underlying voluntary ICP adoption examines whether firm's exposure is relevant driver adoption. Using worldwide sample firms reporting Carbon Disclosure Project between 2016 2018, we find that firm-level climate change significantly positively related likelihood More specifically, probability largely linked regulatory shocks opportunity exposure. Moreover, board independence acts moderator in exposure–ICP relation. The findings this study shed light on factors contributing acceleration implementation context coordinated effort public private sectors global emissions.
